In this blog you will come across a brief history of an ancient mathematician Lady Augusta Ada Byron Lovelace. You will learn about her contribution towards the world of mathematics and her interesting inventions. Further into this blog I will be conducting an interview, this interview is about how mathematics is involved in the interviewee everyday life. After the interview there will be a discussion about the relevance of my research and how it relates to the research questions. I will be stating why I believe mathematics is relevant.

Lady Augusta Ada Byron Lovelace

Augusta Ada Byron was the daughter of the famed poet Lord Byron. Ada Love lance showed her gift for mathematics at an early age. She translated an article on an invention by Charles Babbage and added her own comments because she introduced many computer concepts, Lovelace is considered the first computer programmer.

Ada Lovelace was born on December 10th ,1852. Lovelace had an unusual upbring for an aristocratic girl in the mid-1800s. At her mother’s insistence, tutors taught her mathematics and science.

From early on Lovelace showed a talent for numbers and language.

At the age of 17, Ada met Charles Babbage, a mathematician and inventor. Lovelace began studying advance mathematics with University of London professor Augusta De Morgan. Lovelace was asked to translate an article on Babbage’s analytical engine. She did not only translate the original French text to English but also added her own thoughts and ideas on the machine. Her notes ended up being three times longer than her original article. Her work was published in 1843, in an English science journal. From my research Lady Augusta was an English mathematician but she was called the “first computer programmer” for writing an algorithm and for computing machines in the mid-1800s.

Discussion

I think mathematics is relevant because it gives us the ability to learn and think logically in any field of endeavour. Maths helps you build things, it is incredibly important in our lives and without realizing it, we use mathematical concepts, as well the skills we learn from doing maths every day. Practically every career uses maths in some way.

Things that you wouldn’t expect to bear any relation to maths do in fact comes down to an underlying need for mathematics and the structure it brings to our everyday lives. Take shopping, cooking, traveling, or buying a property for instance. None of these would be possible without the existence of mathematics. Furthermore, maths is everywhere when you consider the educational and professional world. Whether you aspire to study sociology, psychology, physics, biology or even economics maths is held in high regard.
