THE RELEVANCE OF MATHEMATICS IN EVERYDAY LIFE, THEN AND NOW.

                                                    By: Lily Ann Fraser

                       Introduction

In this blog  I am going to be talking about, “The Relevance Of Mathematics Then And Now”. I will be discussing a brief history about Claudius Ptolemy on how mathematics helped him “Then”. When finished I am required to conduct an interview on someone I know or (telephone, text or email) if there isn't anyone in reach, about The Relevance Of Mathematics for “Now”...

History...

Claudius Ptolemy was born in the year 100 AD in Egypt, Roman Empire. He lived in the metropolis of Alexandria on Egypt Mediterranean cost under the rule of the Roman Empire. Alexandria was built by the ancient Greeks but later conquered by the Romans. His name Claudius is a Roman name which made him apart of the Roman citizen, Ptolemy however, is a Greek name and is written in Greek. He was possibly related to the Greek Ptolemy Royal Dynasty, ousted by the Romans in 30BC. There is however, no direct evidence to support a relationship. Claudius Ptolemy was a Mathematician, Astronomer, Natural Philosopher and a Astrologer, he wrote several scientific treatises, his most famous work is the Almagest, an astronomy textbook and star catalogue. The Almagest was a substantial ambitious work. It taught it's students how to predict the location of any heavenly body at any time from anywhere on earth using Claudius Ptolemy Mathematical model of the planet movements.

6: Why do you think Mathematics is important in life?

Answer: She believes that Mathematics is important because if you can't do simple addition, subtraction or division in life people can rob you of your salary or money you may have. If you work in an industry where measurements are important and you can't measure, add or take away from a measurement you could and up with wrong or sloppy work eg. Being a carpenter.

7: Is there anything that made you realize the importance of Mathematics in your job?

Answer: Yes, knowing how to count and average when stock taking so you don't cost your company to order excess amount of thing. Simple things as knowing the time so you don't reach late to work.

8: Is there any particular type of Mathematics you use at your job or everyday life?

Answer: Mostly addiction, because she would normally order stocks for the center and she need to average how much items on a monthly basis.

10: Do you think the different sets or types of maths we do in school is necessary to life?

Answer: Yes, because different jobs call for different types of Mathematics.

                        Discussion

After researching about Claudius Ptolemy and having the interview with Amanda Deonarine I soon come to realize that Mathematics holds a really strong relevance in our everyday life. I didn't get alot of information about Claudius Ptolemy on how Mathematics was for him “Then” but the interview really summed up most of it and telling me that Mathematics is important to our daily life.

                         Conclusion

In this blog i survey a brief history of Claudius Ptolemy and his history of Mathematics “Then”, andi interviewed someone about the importance of Mathematics “Now”.  What i have gathered from my research Mathematics is very important for our everyday life.

  1. Good day, Lillyann, you did make mistakes with spelling and punctuation but other than that I do think you could have added some colours to make it more pleasing to the eye as well as pictures and maybe add some more fonts, other than all that, this paper was lovely to read about Claudius Ptolemy and what he contributed, the interview was also very pleasant to read as well as the rest of your paper

  2. Hi Lily-Ann, I enjoyed reading about the history of Ptolemy and his contributions to math, as well as your interview with Ms. Deonarine. Using different fonts, colours or adding pictures of your mathematician would have made your blog more aesthetically pleasing. Other than that, it was a pretty good read.... Good job!
